The engine must be completely cool when the cylinder heads are removed to avoid warping. Cylinder head removal is a difficult and time-consuming job that requires special tools. Disconnect the negative battery terminal cable and drain the cooling system. Remove the valve covers, intake manifolds, intake manifold spacer, coolant crossover housing, exhaust manifolds, timing belt, upper radiator hose, and coolant extension housing. If overhauling the cylinder head, remove the camshafts. Use a breaker bar to loosen the cylinder head bolts in a specific sequence. Pry at the corners of the cylinder head-to-engine block mating surface to break the gasket seal. Lift the cylinder head(s) off the engine, being careful to store them on wood blocks. Use a tap to chase the threads in the bolt holes. Install the head gasket with the dowels aligned. Carefully position the cylinder heads on the engine block and install new cylinder head bolts. Tighten the bolts in a specific torque sequence using the torque-angle method. Complete the remaining installation steps in reverse. Change the engine oil and filter, then check for leaks. Reconnect the battery.

Cover open areas of the engine with shop rags during repair and use a vacuum cleaner to remove debris from the cylinders. Inspect the mating surfaces for damage and chase the threads in the cylinder head bolt holes with a tap of the correct size. Ensure the new gasket is properly positioned on the block dowels. Carefully place the cylinder head on the block, avoiding gasket disturbance, and install new cylinder head bolts. Following the recommended sequence, torque the bolts to specification, marking a stripe on each main cylinder head bolt to track tightening. Finally, reinstall the timing chain, exhaust manifold, intake manifold, and complete the remaining installation steps, including reconnecting the battery, changing the engine oil and filter, and conducting thorough checks for oil and coolant leaks upon engine startup.
