Saturn Ion Flywheel

The Saturn Ion Flywheel allows the car to build up energy by storing rotational force that keeps the engine running smoothly and the driver confident during clutch engagement. Testament to its rock-solid dependability, the well-built steel Flywheel is resistant to heat and wear on the surface, which owners observe during daily driving for years. The Ion's balanced mass alleviates combustion pulses, allowing the Saturn compact's Ecotec powerplant to rev cleanly and enabling the Ion transmission to deliver crisp shifts without jolting vibration. All Ions, be it the sedan, the quad coupe, or the feisty red line, accept the same fitment pattern so drivers can fit either the traditional one-piece Flywheel or the fancier dual mass version that hides a spring damper between two plates to quieten drivetrain noise. An effective Flywheel minimizes the crank time as it interfaces directly with the starter gear, thereby saving battery power as well. Further, it provides an added margin of safety against cold starts in Saturn. The friction face of the Flywheel ring gear teeth comes with generous lead-ins preventing grinding. Further, the mirror finish on the friction face ensures even clutch grip resulting in confident launches on wet or inclined surfaces. The device minimizes the stress imposed on axle seals and bearings by absorbing torsional spikes, thereby enhancing the service life of connected parts and assisting Saturn in acquiring a solid name for inexpensive ownership. The weight is optimized so that the Flywheel possesses enough inertia for stable idle but is yet light enough to allow a free-revving 2.2-liter engine. This optimized balance equates to improved fuel economy and lower emissions. According to owners, their Saturn Ion always starts immediately even after long storage, proof that the Flywheel continues to work. It is agreed by every Saturn driver that the Ion is more responsive, which makes an Ion in heavy traffic feel more stable because of this improvement.

Each OEM Saturn Ion Flywheel we offer is competitively priced and comes with the assurance of the manufacturer's warranty for the part. Furthermore, we guarantee the speedy delivery of your orders right to your doorstep. Our hassle-free return policy is also in place for your peace of mind.

Saturn Ion Flywheel Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and reinstall a flywheel/driveplate on Saturn ION?
    A:
Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, then remove the transaxle. If it's leaking, now would be a very good time to replace the front pump seal/O-ring (automatic transaxle only). If you're working on a manual transaxle equipped vehicle, remove the pressure plate and clutch disc. Now is a good time to check/replace the clutch components. Use a center punch or paint to make alignment marks on the flywheel/driveplate and crankshaft to ensure correct alignment during installation. Remove the bolts that secure the flywheel/driveplate to the crankshaft. If the crankshaft turns, wedge a screwdriver in the ring gear teeth to jam the flywheel. Remove the flywheel/driveplate from the crankshaft. Since the flywheel is fairly heavy, be sure to support it while removing the last bolt. If an automatic transaxle-equipped vehicle has a spacer between the crankshaft and the driveplate, note which way it was installed. Clean the flywheel to remove grease and oil. Inspect the surface for cracks, rivet grooves, burned areas and score marks. Light scoring can be removed with emery cloth. Check for cracked and broken ring gear teeth. Lay the flywheel on a flat surface and use a straightedge to check for warpage. Clean and inspect the mating surfaces of the flywheel/driveplate and the crankshaft. If the crankshaft rear seal is leaking, replace it before reinstalling the flywheel/driveplate. Position the flywheel/driveplate against the crankshaft, installing the spacer if one was present originally. Be sure to align the mating marks made during removal. Note that some engines have an alignment dowel or staggered bolt holes to ensure correct installation. Before installing the bolls, apply thread locking compound to the threads. Wedge a screwdriver in the ring gear teeth to keep the flywheel/driveplate from turning and tighten the bolts to the torque. Work up to the final torque. The remainder of installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
