Saturn Shift Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers
A: In order to get to the shift cable, one has to remove the battery, battery tray, and the tray support. For models with VT25-E transaxles, do all the preceding operations with the car safely jacked up on jackstands and the cable disconnected from the steering gear. Gently push the tip of the shift lever against the transaxle shift lever coupled to the shifter cable, to finally loose it from the bracket; then remove the cable clip, which will then provide leverage to pull the cable away from the bracket. Head to the back part of the shift cable where there is a console and after you remove the covers, you can then pull the cable and remove it from shifter assembly and thereafter throw away the cable clip. Locate the retainer of the cable and remove it, remove the grommet off the firewall and pull out the cable through the mentioned hole. Retrieving is the opposite of fixing and has to make sure the cable is adjusted before the connection on the bracket of the transaxle. For the adjustment, locate the shifting lever and transaxle shift lever in Neutral small, remove the shift cable from the bracket and replace the clip with a new one. Insert a flat blade screwdriver under the protection cover above the adjustment lock, lift the tab and move the black button outwards, push the lock of the adjuster until the cable can be adjusted without hindrance. As for the clip on the bracket, fit a new one and push the cable home to the ballstud of the transaxle shift lever and lock the adjustment tab. Having secured the adjustment, apply the parking brake as well as lower the vehicle and observe whether it runs in the correct range or not.
