- A:The Evaporative Emission Control (EVAP) System is designed to reduce evaporated hydrocarbons (fuel) from entering the atmosphere. The most important component of this system is the EVAP charcoal canister, which stores the evaporated fuel drawn from the fuel tank. When certain conditions are met, the PCM commands the EVAP solenoid to open, allowing engine vacuum to purge the canister by drawing the stored fuel into the throttle body. This fuel is then burned in the combustion process. The EVAP system also includes the EVAP canister purge valve, EVAP canister vent valve, fuel tank, and fuel tank pressure sensor, all of which play a role in regulating and monitoring the system. Various tests are performed by the PCM to ensure the proper functioning of the EVAP system, and component testing can be done to diagnose any issues.
