Q:
How to inspect piston/connecting rod assemblies and replace piston rings? Posted by Customer
A:
Before proceeding with the inspection, clean the piston/connecting rod assemblies and remove the original piston rings, ensuring you always use new rings when reassembling the engine. Utilize a piston ring installation tool to carefully remove the rings without damaging the pistons. Take care to scrape all carbon deposits from the piston tops, using a handheld wire brush or fine emery cloth after most of the deposits are scraped away; avoid using a wire brush mounted in a drill motor to prevent piston erosion. Employ a piston ring groove cleaning tool or a piece of an old ring to remove carbon deposits from the ring grooves without damaging the groove sides. After deposit removal, clean the piston/rod assemblies with solvent and dry them with compressed air if available. If the pistons and cylinder walls show no significant damage or excessive wear and the engine block isn't rebored, new pistons may not be necessary. Regular piston wear manifests as even vertical wear on piston thrust surfaces and slight top ring looseness in its groove. Always use new piston rings when rebuilding an engine. Thoroughly inspect each piston for cracks around the skirt, at the pin bosses, and ring lands. Check for scoring, scuffing, holes in the piston crown, or burned areas at the crown edge, which indicate issues like overheating, abnormal combustion, or spark knock that must be addressed. Corrosion in the form of small pits indicates coolant leakage, necessitating corrective action. Measure piston ring side clearance using a feeler gauge beside a new piston ring in each groove, checking at multiple locations. Measure piston-to-bore clearance by measuring the bore and piston diameter at specific points depending on the engine type. If clearances exceed specifications, reboring the block and installing new pistons and rings will be required. Examine piston-to-rod clearance by checking for play, addressing excessive wear at an automotive machine shop if necessary. If piston disassembly is necessary, consult an automotive machine shop, and while there, check connecting rods for bend and twist, but avoid disassembling pistons and connecting rods unless necessary. Inspect connecting rods for cracks and damage, and temporarily remove rod caps to inspect and replace old bearing inserts, cleaning the rod and cap bearing surfaces and installing the caps with new bearings if the engine is being rebuilt due to a connecting rod knock.
