Q:

A:
To replace the lower lateral control arm, remove the lower control arm-to-trailing arm mounting bolt and nut, along with the fuel tank heat shield and fuel tank. A:
To replace the upper lateral control arm, start by loosening the rear wheel lug nuts, chocking the front wheels, and raising the rear of the vehicle on jackstands. Remove the rear wheels, then the upper control arm-to-trailing arm mounting bolt and nut. Remove the fuel tank heat shield and the fuel tank itself, followed by the pivot bolt from the inner end of the arm. Inspect the control arm pivot bushing for deterioration, and replace it if necessary. Reinstallation is the reverse of removal, tightening the fasteners to the specified torque.

Q:
How do you remove the trailing arm for the 2000 Saturn LS1? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the trailing arm, first remove the brake shoe or disc brake assembly, ABS wheel speed sensor, and associated brackets. Unbolt the brake hose and brake line brackets, as well as the parking brake cable brackets. Remove the hub and bearing assembly, and suspend the brake backing plate out of the way. Remove the shock absorber/coil spring-to-trailing arm mounting bolt and the rear stabilizer bar link-to-trailing arm bolt. Support the trailing arm with a jack, then remove the bolts securing the upper and lower lateral control arms to the trailing arm. Mark the relationship of the trailing arm mounting bracket in relation to the vehicle chassis, then remove the bracket bolts and lower the trailing arm from the vehicle. Inspect the trailing arm pivot bushing for wear and replace if necessary. During installation, align the mounting bracket with match marks on the vehicle chassis, install the mounting bolts, and tighten them. Finally, tighten all other fasteners to their specified torque, and check and adjust the rear wheel alignment if needed.
