The idle speed of the engine is controlled by the Idle Control Valve (ICV), which is regulated by the ECM/PCM. The ICV adjusts the air bypassing the throttle plate to maintain the idle speed based on various engine conditions. The idle speed is not adjustable on these models. To test the ICV, a scan tool is required, but there are limited tests that can be performed by a home mechanic to verify its operation. When the engine is started cold, the ICV should vary the idle as the engine warms up. If the engine stumbles or stalls, or if there are signs of ICV failure, further testing is needed. The electrical connector should be disconnected from the ICV and the resistance across its terminals should be measured. If an open circuit is detected, the ICV should be replaced. If the ICV is functioning properly, the ECM/PCM should be diagnosed by a qualified repair shop. To replace the ICV, access it by removing the necessary components, disconnect the electrical connector, and remove the valve from the throttle body. Inspect and clean the valve and throttle body if necessary. If installing a new ICV, measure the distance from the tip of the pintle to the mounting flange and adjust it if necessary. Install a new O-ring, lubricate it, and securely tighten the valve. Reset the valve by cycling the ignition key and then start the engine to check the idle operation.
