Lift the vehicle and support it with jackstands securely, remove the
Transfer Case skid plate. Note: With long-nose pliers, remove the horseshoe-shaped clip which secures the shift cable to the bracket on the transfer case, and with the aid of a screwdriver, disengage the end of the shift cable from the lever. Pull the control cable out of the bracket, take the jackstands off, and come down with the vehicle. Next, the horseshoe-shaped clip below the knob can be taken out with the help of long-nose pliers, thus the knob has to be detached from the transfer case shift lever, and the center console has to be removed. Pull the cable end from the shift lever, remove the retainer clip on the shift lever base and take out the cable retainer clip screws. Draw the cable up through the floor pan into the passenger compartment; run the new cable up through the floor. Lift the vehicle once more and put it on jackstands for stability, make sure the switch located by the transfer case is in the Neutral position when connecting it with the moving cable. Insert the cable into its hook on the transfer case then fit a retainer clip over it before lowering the vehicle off the jackstands. Insert the cable into the shift lever base slot and place the retainer clip, shift the lever into Neutral. Screw the shifted cable to loosen the locknut and rotate the threaded end of the electromagnetic cable and be in line with the pin of the shift lever before tightening the locknut and fixing the cable end on the shift lever. In completing this job, follow the reversal of the removal processes outlined in this guideline.
