Removal of the wiper arms requires the use of special tool, GM J-8966 or equivalent pry tool. Lift the wiper arm from the window, then insert the tool under the wiper arm. Lever the arm off the transmission drive shaft. Use care not to damage the paint on the vehicle. Remove the wiper blade from the arm. To install, install the wiper blade onto the arm, position the wiper arm on the wiper motor drive shaft so that the blade assembly rests in the proper park position, and press down on the wiper arm until it is fully seated on the drive shaft. The same special tool for removal can be used for installation.

Ensure that the wiper arms are in the self-parked position with the motor switched off in low speed mode. Carefully note the position of the wiper arm in relation to the windshield lower reveal molding, using tape to mark the exact location on the glass. Using a suitable hooked tool or small screwdriver, pull aside the small spring tang that holds the wiper arm to the spline transmission shaft while simultaneously pulling the arm from the shaft. Installation involves reversing the removal process, but do not push the arm fully onto the shaft until the alignment has been checked; if needed, the arm can be pulled off and turned through one or two serrations of the shaft to correct the alignment without pulling aside the spring tang. Finally, press the arm fully onto its shaft, wet the windshield glass, and operate the motor on low speed to ensure the arc of travel is correct.

Intense heat from the sun, snow and ice, road oils, and windshield washer solvents can cause rubber wiper refills to deteriorate.

The standard equipment of a two-speed wiper motor includes the gear train and self-parking mechanism.

Check the alignment of the arm.

Start by disconnecting the negative battery cable and removing the instrument cluster trim panel. Then, remove the switch from the rear by taking out the 2 mounting screws.
