Q:
How do I remove the Steering Knuckle? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the hub and bearing assembly, start by loosening the wheel lug nuts and raising the front of the vehicle on jackstands. Remove the wheel and disconnect the ABS wheels speed sensor electrical connector and detach it from its bracket. Also, detach the ABS wire harness from the control arm, if equipped. Remove the driveaxle/hub nut and then remove the brake caliper, caliper mounting bracket, and brake disc from the hub. Next, remove the hub and bearing assembly. Detach the tie-rod end from the steering knuckle and mark the strut to the steering knuckle before removing the strut-to-steering knuckle bolts. Separate the strut from the steering knuckle and suspend it with a cord or wire. Remove the cotter pin from the ball stud on the balljoint and loosen the castle nut. Use a balljoint separator tool to detach the balljoint from the steering knuckle and finally remove the steering knuckle. To install, guide the knuckle into the strut mounting flange and insert the mounting fasteners without tightening them yet. Guide the driveaxle in place and install the hub and bearing assembly, leaving the mounting fasteners finger tight. Attach the ball stud to the steering knuckle and tighten the castle nut to the proper torque specifications, then install a new cotter pin. Attach the tie-rod to the steering knuckle and tighten the tie-rod nut to the proper torque specifications. Align the steering knuckle using the marks on the strut flange and tighten the nuts to the correct torque specifications. Tighten the hub and bearing assembly mounting bolts to the proper torque specifications. Install and connect the electrical connector for the ABS wheel speed sensor, if equipped. Place the brake disc on the hub and install the caliper mounting bracket and caliper. Install the driveaxle/hub nut and tighten it to the proper torque specifications. Install the wheel and lug nuts, then lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts to the proper torque specifications. Finally, have the front-end alignment checked and adjusted if necessary.
