Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Using a large syringe or suction gun, suck as much fluid out of the power steering fluid reservoir as possible. Place a drain pan under the vehicle to catch any fluid that spills out when the hoses are disconnected. For a four-cylinder engine, disconnect the return hose from the power steering pump, then using a flare-nut wrench, unscrew the pressure line fitting from the pump. Unscrew and remove the two mounting bolts, and remove the power steering pump. Remove the retaining clips and detach the reservoir from the pump. Remove the reservoir-to-pump O-ring. Check the condition of the O-ring, replacing it if necessary. For a V6 engine, remove the air filter housing. Loosen the three bolts securing the power steering pump pulley to the pump. Remove the drivebelt. Disconnect the return hose from the power steering pump, then using a flare-nut wrench, unscrew the pressure line fitting from the pump. Remove the power steering pump pulley, then remove three bolts securing the pump to the mounting bracket and remove the pump. If you're installing a new pump, it may be necessary to transfer the pulley hub to the new pump. You'll need a special puller to remove the pulley hub, from the old pump, and another special tool to install it on the new pump. These tools are available at most auto parts stores. Before removing the pulley hub from the old pump, measure the distance the pulley hub is pressed onto the pump shaft; the hub must be reinstalled to the same depth. Installation is the reverse of removal, noting the following points: Tighten the bolts and fittings securely. The 0-ring on the high-pressure outlet should be replaced. Install the drivebelt. Fill the power steering reservoir with the recommended fluid. Bleed the power steering hydraulic system.
