    Q:
What is the systematic approach for replacing spark plugs on Chevrolet Traverse? Posted by Customer
    A:
When replacing spark plugs, remove each one at a time following a particular procedure. To access the spark plugs for the front cylinder bank (BANK 2) in models 2009 and up you might have to remove intake manifold. A spark plug socket, extensions, gap gauge for gap adjustment and torque wrench for proper tightening are necessary tools for this job. Prior to removing them from the package adjust the gaps of the new spark plugs to specifications then replace them one at a time so as not to cause mix-up. Before starting the vehicle allow it to cool off completely, inspect new plugs for defects and correct gaps if necessary. It is important to check for any cracks in porcelain insulator. Ensure that you do not scratch off platinum or iridium coating on electrodes. Take out ignition coils and if possible blow compressed air around the spark plugs in order to prevent dirt or other impurities from entering into the engine cylinders. With a sparkplug socket, unscrew and remove old sparkplugs. Compare with reference materials to evaluate state of engine operation using old plugs from car's engine. Apply anti-seize compound on threads of new plugs and tighten them using a torque wrench or ratchet; utilize rubber hose as an instrument against crossthreading while screwing them into place. Put back ignition coil and repeat this process with remaining sparkplugs.

    Q:
What tools are necessary for replacing spark plugs, and what steps should be followed during the process on Pontiac G6? Posted by Customer
    A:
Spark plugs are situated in the cylinder heads and tools required for spark plugs replacement are a spark plug socket that fits on a ratchet; a number of extensions and a gap gauge which is used to check and set the gaps on new spark plugs. New plugs should be tightened by using torque wrench. New plugs should be bought beforehand, installed to the required gap and fitted a single one at a time to ensure that the proper type of plug is used for the particular type of engine. With the aluminium cylinder heads, race the engine for an hour or until it cools and then remove the plugs to start the scrapping process. While waiting, check and strip new plug for defects and measure the gap between electrodes by using the gauge of proper thickness If a gap is necessary then making slight bending of the side electrode is done in such a way that the porcelain insulator is not to be damaged. On the four-cylinder and 3.6L V6 models, each ignition coil must come out first before the spark plug wire can be pulled on 3.5L and 3.9L V6 models, only the spark plug wire boot should be pulled. The area around the spark plug must be clean, if possible, blow any dirt from the spark plug hole then place the spark plug socket in place and turn it counter clockwise. Don't work on the old spark plug but check on the running condition of the engine and replace the plug with a new one that cannot be turned by hand and then tighten it with a torque wrench or a ratchet. A small section of rubber hose can be employed to ease the threading of the plug and also protect threads to avoid their damage. There are 4 more spark plugs on the engine; perform the same process on all of them.
