Tighten the starter motor mounting bolts.

Before assuming the starter is the problem, it is important to check the following items: 1. Clean and tight battery cable clamps where they connect to the battery. 2. Condition of the battery cables. 3. Battery's condition. 4. Starter solenoid wiring and connections. 5. Starter mounting bolts for tightness. 6. Ensure the shift lever is in PARK or NEUTRAL.

To remove the starter motor, first disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Then, on V8 models, loosen the wheel lug nuts for the right front wheel and raise the front of the vehicle on jackstands. On V6 models, remove the oil pan skid plate, if equipped, and on V8 models, remove the right front wheel well splash shield. Remove the starter motor heat shield, if equipped, and disconnect the battery cable and starter control cable from the starter motor solenoid terminals. On V8 models, remove the transmission cover. Finally, remove the starter motor mounting bolts and remove the starter motor. To install the starter motor, simply reverse the removal steps and be sure to tighten the mounting bolts to the torque specifications.

During the installation of the starter motor for 4.3L V6 (2018 and later), 4.8L, 5.3L, and 6.0L V8 engines, you should proceed with the installation in reverse order, ensuring that the starter motor mounting bolts are tightened to the specified torque.

Perform the following checks and inspections when troubleshooting a starting circuit issue:Ensure the battery cable clamps are clean and securely fastened at the battery terminals.Assess the condition of the battery cables and replace any damaged ones.Test the battery's condition and replace it with a new battery if it fails any tests.Examine the wiring and connections associated with the starter motor.Check the tightness of the starter motor mounting bolts.Inspect the relevant fuses in the engine compartment fuse box and replace any blown fuses.

Regarding the starter motor and its connections, you should:Examine the starter motor's wiring and connections.Confirm the tightness of its mounting bolts.

If the starter turns over slowly, the following steps should be taken: 1. Check the starter cranking voltage. 2. Check the current drawn from the battery. 3. If the starter cranking amp values are not within the correct range, replace the starter with a new unit.

Remove the transmission cover.

If the starter is receiving voltage but does not activate, the following steps should be taken: 1. Remove and check the starter/solenoid assembly on the bench. 2. Ensure that the engine is not seized. 3. If the solenoid plunger extends and rotates the pinion drive, the starter/solenoid assembly is working properly.

Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal.

Loosen the wheel lug nuts for the right front wheel and raise the front of the vehicle on jackstands.

For six-cylinder models,Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Loosen the left front wheel lug nuts, then raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the left front wheel. Disconnect the electrical connections at the starter (Remove the nuts and disconnect the battery cable and the solenoid terminal from the starter (you'll be working through the fenderwell)). Remove the starter nut (top) and bolt (bottom) then remove the starter through the fenderwell (Remove the starter mounting nut and bolt). Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the starter mounting fasteners to the specific torque. Install the wheel and lug nuts. Lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts to the specific torque. V8 MODELS: Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Detach any brackets from the rear steering gear crossmember, then remove it or, remove the catalytic converter for clearance as necessary. Note: It should not be necessary to remove both components. Remove the engine splash shield. Remove the starter solenoid shield and the transmission bell housing bolt (Remove the transmission bellhousing cover bolt). Remove the starter mounting bolts (Remove the starter mounting bolts). Carefully lower the starter with the terminals facing toward the front of the vehicle. Disconnect the wires from the terminals on the starter solenoid (Remove the nuts and disconnect the battery cable and the solenoid terminal from the starter) and remove the starter from the vehicle. Installation is the reverse of removal.

If the starter motor does not operate, the following steps should be taken: 1. Check for battery voltage to the solenoid. 2. Test the starting system circuit.

Remove the starter motor heat shield, if equipped.
