    Q:
How to replace the speedometer gear seal and transfer case seal on Chevrolet El Camino? Posted by Customer
    A:
The following oil seals can be replaced without removing the transmission from the car. For the speedometer gear seal, raise the vehicle for access beneath and set it firmly on stands. Disconnect the speedometer cable, remove the lockplate to extension bolt and lockwasher, then take out the lockplate. Use a screwdriver to pry the fitting gear and shaft from the extension, and then pry out the O-ring. Installation is the reverse of removal; lubricate the new seal with transmission lubricant and ensure the slot in the fitting is towards the lockplate boss on the extension. For the extension oil seal, first remove the drive shaft and any ancillary items necessary for additional clearance. Carefully pry out the old seal, clean the counterbore, and examine it for any damage. Pre-lubricate between the lips of the new seal with transmission lubricant and coat the outer diameter with a suitable sealant. Install the seal with the lips inwards until the flange seats, ideally using a tubular spacer for this job. Finally, reinstall the drive shaft and any other ancillary items that were removed.

How to replace the speedometer gear seal and transfer case seal on Chevrolet Caprice? Posted by Customer
    A:
The following oil seals can be replaced without removing the transmission from the car, namely the speedometer gear seal and the extension oil seal. To access closer to the vehicle, lift it and place it securely on jack stands. Remove the speedometer cable, unscrew the lock washer and the extension bolt and take off the lock plate. Using a screw driver, the fitting gear and shaft needs to be removed from the extension and the O-ring at the same place. As for the installation, reverse the removal procedure and do not forget to cover the new seal with the transmission lubricants, also, the positioning of the assembly should be so executed that the key-slot in the fitting should be placed opposite the lockplate boss on the extension. If required, extension oil seal remove the drive shaft and other related accessories for more clearances for easy fixing of the extension oil seal. From the carburetor carefully pull out the old seal, and scrape the counterbore area to ensure it is free from any damage. Before assembling the new seal put some transmission lubricant between the lips of the new seal as well as applying an appropriate sealant on the outer diameter of the seal. Fit it with lips turned inwards and should only be adjusted once the flange comes in contact with the seats, preferably a tubular spacer should be used at this stage. Last of all, replace any other components you might have un-mounted such as the drive shaft.

    Q:
How to replace the Transfer Case Seal on Chevrolet El Camino? Posted by Customer
    A:
This operation can be performed on the transmission without any need to be detached from the vehicle. Starting with positioning of the car over a pit or lifting it with aid of jacking to provide access to the transmission, and providing support with jack stands. Secondly, remove the drive shaft from the work by delinking it from the transmission. In order to remove the seal, dent it and try to use it as a lever with the help of a screwdriver or a chisel. Take some jointing compound and place it on the outer perimeter of the new seal then using a piece of tubing as a drift; force it into the position. Last, but not the least, replace the driveshaft back and check the level of the fluid in the transmission unit.

    Q:
How to replace oil seals in a transmission on GMC Sonoma with Transfer Case Seal? Posted by Customer
    A:
Oil leaks frequently occur due to wear of the extension housing oil seal and bushing (if equipped), or the speedometer drive gear oil seal and o-ring. Replacement of these seals is relatively easy since the repairs can usually be performed without removing the transmission from the vehicle. The extension housing oil seal is located at the extreme rear of the transmission, where the driveshaft is attached. If leakage at the seal is suspected, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands. If the seal is leaking, transmission lubricant will be built up on the front of the driveshaft and may be dripping from the rear of the transmission. To remove the oil seal and bushing, remove the driveshaft and carefully tap the dust shield (if equipped) to the rear and remove it from the transmission. On cast iron case (heavy duty) five-speed manual transmissions, remove the nut and U-joint flange. Using a screwdriver or seal removal tool, carefully pry the oil seal and bushing (if equipped) out of the rear of the transmission, being careful not to damage the splines on the transmission output shaft. If the oil seal and bushing cannot be removed with a screwdriver or pry bar, a special oil seal removal tool will be required. To install the new oil seal and bushing, use a large section of pipe or a very large deep socket as a drift and drive it into the bore squarely, making sure it's completely seated. Install a new bushing using the same method. Reinstall the U-joint flange and nut (if equipped) and tighten the nut to the torque specifications. Reinstall the dust shield (if equipped) by carefully tapping it into place. Finally, lubricate the splines of the transmission output shaft and the outside of the driveshaft sleeve yoke with lightweight grease, then install the driveshaft, being careful not to damage the lip of the new seal.

    Q:
Can the transfer case seal be replaced on Pontiac Firebird? Posted by Customer
    A:
The extension housing oil seal unlike other parts can be done without the transmission being removed from the car. It is advisable to start the operation by lifting the car up to a comfortable working level using the jack and supporting it by means of readily available jack-stands. Empty the transmission of lubricant as required. Next, remove the driveshaft. Using seal removal tool or simple large screwdriver remove the old worn out seal and clean the counter bore to assess the extent of the damage. On the outer diameter, you have to put some sealant and in the region between two lips of the new seal, there should be an application of transmission oil. It is best to push the seal on the flange with the lip turned in until the flange grabs the seal, it can be forced with a seal driver, a large pipe wrench or a socket wrench or with a section of pipe of the proper outside diameter. Following installation ensure that the driveshaft is reinstalled, then you make sure that you fill the transmission with the appropriate lubricant.
