    Q:
How to remove and install an exhaust manifold in 2.3L four cylinder (Quad-4) engine on Pontiac Grand Prix? Posted by Customer
    A:
When replacing the exhausted manifold, you should follow these steps, The first thing that need to done is to unscrew the negative battery terminal; if there is an audio system with Theftlock system, make sure to turn it off. Then, disconnect the harness connector and oxygen sensor and then take off the manifold heat shields. Lift the car with jackstands safely and unbolt the exhaust pipe to manifold joint using a combination of penetrating oil, applying torque in left and right random cycle. Then unbolt the exhaust manifold brace and then loosen the nuts of the exhaust pipe flange from the manifold studs by pulling the pipe downwards slightly to ease off. Tighten the exhaust manifold mounting nuts an eighth of a turn clockwise each time from inside until they cannot be tightened any further, then remove the manifold bolts and remove the manifold from the head. Installation requires the mating surfaces of the manifold and cylinder head to be clean, use of gasket scraper to remove old gasket material and carbon deposits contour. A new gasket should be put in place, the manifold fasteners should be tightened by hand and then by a prescribed torque in the recommended sequence Finally other procedures will have to be reversed in the order of removal.

    Q:
How to remove and install an exhaust manifold in 2.5L four cylinder engine on Pontiac Grand Prix? Posted by Customer
    A:
To start with, to be safe remove the negative terminal of the battery, as well as if the car you are working on is fitted with Theftlock audio system, make sure that the lockout feature is off. Then, disconnect the electrical connection of the oxygen sensor and, finally, unmould the drivebelt and the alternator. Subsequently remove the torque rod, lift the front of the vehicle and securely place it on jackstands applying the parking brake and placing blocks behind the rear wheels. Remove the nuts on the exhaust pipe and the manifold then lower the car. Go on to remove the oil level indicator tube followed by the removal of the exhaust manifold-to-cylinder head nuts or bolts, then pull the manifold away from the engine and up out of the flange of the exhaust pipe, dispose of the gasket used here. Remove all the remaining gasket materials from the mating surfaces of the exhaust manifold and head of cylinder. Regarding installation: Thoroughly clean all bolt and stud threads, the manifold mounting studs for example should be wire brushed, whereas cylinder head bolt holes should be tapped. In the case where a new manifold is replaced, the oxygen sensor is relocated from the former manifold. Last but not the least, reverse the above steps and fit a new manifold, but this time you will require a new gasket and tighten the bolts in the right pattern and to the prescribed torque.
