- Q:How to remove and inspect an oil pump in 2.3L four cylinder (Quad-4) engine? Posted by Customer
- A:Remove the oil pan. While supporting the oil pump, remove the mounting bolts. Lower the pump from the engine. Clean all parts thoroughly and remove the cover. Visually inspect all parts for wear, cracks and other damage. Check the oil pump drive gear and driven gear for wear and damage. Replace the pump if it's defective, if the engine has high mileage or if the engine is being rebuilt. Position the pump and shims on the engine and install the mounting bolts. Tighten them. Oil pump drive gear backlash must be checked whenever the oil pump, crankshaft or engine block is replaced. Mount a dial indicator on the engine with the indicator stem touching the oil pump driven gear. Check the backlash. Add or subtract shims to obtain the desired back-lash. Install the oil pan (and baffle, if removed). Add oil and run the engine. Check for oil pressure and leaks.Posted by GMPartsGiant Specialist
