Q:
How to remove and install the Coil Springs on a Cadillac ElDorado and Fleetwood? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove and install the control arm on a Deville or Fleetwood, start by raising and supporting the vehicle. Remove the wheel and tire assembly, as well as the height sensor link or parking brake cable retaining clip. Take off the rear stabilizer bar from the knuckle bracket. Use a tool to cradle the control arm bushings and secure it to a jack. Raise the jack to remove tension from the control arm bolts. Place a chain around the spring and through the control arm for safety. Remove the pivot bolt, nut, and washer from the rear and front of the control arm. Lower the jack to pivot the control arm downward and remove the spring, insulators, and safety chain. To install, inspect and replace the spring insulators if necessary. Snap the upper insulator onto the spring and install the lower insulator and spring in the proper position. Use the tool on a jack to raise the control arm into position and install the pivot bolts and nuts. Reconnect the rear stabilizer bar and the height sensor link or parking brake cable retaining clip. Install the wheel and tire assembly and lower the vehicle. Finally, tighten the control arm nuts and stabilizer bar link bolt to the specified torque. For Eldorado and Seville models, follow similar steps but also support the inner end of the lower control arm with a jack. Disconnect the stabilizer bar and shock absorber, remove the inner lower control arm nuts and bolts, and lower the control arm to relieve spring pressure. Pull down the control arm and remove the coil spring. To install, place the coil spring and insulators in the proper position. Raise the inner end of the lower control arm with the jack and install the nuts and bolts. Reconnect the shock absorber and stabilizer link. Position the jack under the outer end of the control arm and raise it to the normal ride height position. Tighten the nuts and bolts to the specified torque. Install the wheel and tire assembly and lower the vehicle, then check the rear wheel alignment.
