    Q:
When should the CV boots be checked for damage on Cadillac Fleetwood? Posted by Customer
    A:
The CV (Constant Velocity) boots should be checked for damage each time the oil is changed and any other time the vehicle is raised for service. These boots keep water, grime, dirt, and other damaging matter from entering the CV-joints. Any of these could cause early CV-joint failure that can be expensive to repair. Heavy grease thrown around the inside of the front wheel(s) and on the brake caliper/drum can be an indication of a torn boot. Thoroughly check the boots for missing clamps and tears. If the boot is damaged, it should be replaced immediately.

    Q:
How to Replace a CV Boot on Pontiac Grand Prix? Posted by Customer
    A:
Where the CV joints are worn especially where the boots are torn, then consider all other options than to embark on the overhaul of the CV joints. Rebuilt CV Boots are offered on an exchange basis to save much time and effort in the provision and installation of the product. However, in order to avoid making loses, when dismantling the vehicle, ensure that you compare the price of the spare part and its accessibility. Start by having the CV Boot pulled out and clamped in a vise and the rags must be used to avoid scratching. In the case of the inner CV joint, remove the boot seal clamps and retract the boot to the centre where it will act as a reference to align the tri-pot housing and drive axle. Taking off the inner retaining ring to expose the front one, take out the front ring and the joint will slide off. Pop one shaft out of its housing either with a gear puller or with two sockets connected by a steel bar; place a piece of tape or cloth over the bearing to keep it from falling out of the housing or to minimize possibility of scratching it during the following operations. Feeding the bearing cage dusty air can cause premature rusting and fatigue. However, if you remove one gear from its housing, you will have a chance to clean out old grease from the Before putting back in, use CV joint grease on the inner bearing surface, including caps. It is recommended to wrap the splines of the CV Boot with tape so that the boot will not be damaged; insert the boot and the spider bearing into the correct position with the aid of a half-round punch which is hammered into the counterbore so that the recess is towards the end of the CV Boot. Fill half of the housing with grease and keep the rest of it in the boot and then fit the tri-pot housing and trim down the boot size. For the outer CV joint, gently hammer around the seal retainer to take it off, cut the boot band and then withdraw the joint assembly after the removal of the snap-ring. Label the inner race as well as the cage so that the parts are easily reassembled; take out the ball bearings and wash all the part and check for signs of damage. Put back the inner race and cage such that the marks could be seen and fit the balls into the cage slots. Again, fill the CV joint assembly with the lubricant through the inner splined hole; a wooden dowel is used to charge the bearing with the grease. Mount the boot on the CV Boot, lubricate the inside of the boot with grease and position the CV joint on the splines of the CV Boot and push it till the retaining ring snaps into place. Finally, place the inner boot end in the seal groove, put on the retainer clamp and tighten the seal retainer, but for the earlier models, a seal retainer is used than boot retaining clamps.

    Q:
Why are CV boots important on Pontiac Grand Prix? Posted by Customer
    A:
The function of the CV boots is to protect the constant velocity (CV) joints from debris ingress and subsequent damage. The importance of inspecting the rubber CV boot for tears, cracks as well as loose clamps cannot be overemphasized. Applying pressure on the CV boots can help detect any crack. If there is a sign of grease leakages or cracks, this means that they should be substituted.
