Install a new head gasket with the dowels in the block holding it in place. To install, clean the cylinder head gasket surface, place the cylinder head on the dowels in the block, and use thread sealer on all head bolts. Tighten the bolts incrementally in the specified sequence to the final torque value as per the Torque Specifications chart. Finally, reassemble the remaining components in reverse order. For Chevrolet engines, be sure to use a torque wrench for tightening the cylinder head bolts, and for Oldsmobile diesel engines, clean the mating surfaces thoroughly, use a new head gasket, and follow specific torque and sealing procedures. Additionally, check the cylinder head for warpage using a straightedge and feeler gauges, and if warpage exceeds specified limits, have the cylinder head resurfaced by a professional machine shop.
