Q:
How is the replacement of tie rods typically done with the rack and pinion in the Buick Skylark,Oldsmobile Omega and Pontiac Phoenix? Posted by Customer
A:
In most cases, the replacement of one or both tie rods can be done with the rack and pinion in the car, although for photographic clarity, we performed the operation with the rack and pinion removed. Start by raising the front of the car and supporting it with jackstands, then remove the front wheel. Next, remove the tie rod nut that secures the outer tie rod to the steering knuckle. Using a GM special tool or equivalent, disengage the tie rod from the steering knuckle. It's important to mark the relationship of the jam nut to the inner tie rod threads so similar front end alignment can be maintained upon installation. Then, back off the jam nut from the outer tie rod and unscrew the outer tie rod from the inner tie rod. To install, position the jam nut at its mark on the threads and screw the outer tie rod onto the inner tie rod until it's snug against the jam nut. Using a C-clamp and a 1 1/8-in (27 mm) socket, install the tie rod into the steering knuckle. Install the tie rod nut and torque to specs, then torque the jam nut to specs. Mount the front wheel and lower the car to the ground. Finally, a front end alignment must now be performed.
