Drain the cooling system, then remove the radiator, fan, pulleys, belts, and water pump. If the vehicle has air conditioning, unbolt the condenser and position it out of the way; if any hoses need to be disconnected, have the system discharged by a dealer or qualified specialist. Next, remove the grille, followed by the intake manifold. Take off the rocker arm covers, rocker arm and shaft assemblies, pushrods, and valve lifters. Remove the fuel pump and distributor, plugging the fuel lines to prevent drainage. Then, remove the harmonic balancer, timing chain cover, timing chain, and sprockets, ensuring the timing marks on the sprockets are aligned before removal to avoid damaging the camshaft journals. Slide the camshaft forward out of the bearing bores, being extremely careful to avoid damaging the bearings and bearing surfaces. Upon re-installation, lubricate the camshaft lobes with heavy oil, and after confirming that the camshaft timing marks are aligned, re-install all components in reverse order using new gaskets.
