Chevrolet Flywheel Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to remove and install a flywheel/driveplate in V6 engine on Chevrolet Astro?
A: To begin, remove the transmission, ensuring that if the vehicle has a manual transmission, the pressure plate and clutch are also taken out. Next, jam a large screwdriver in the starter ring gear to prevent the crankshaft from turning, and then remove the mounting bolts while supporting the flywheel as the last bolt is taken out due to its weight. After that, pull straight back on the flywheel/driveplate to detach it from the crankshaft. For installation, reverse the removal process, making sure the driveplate is mounted with the torque converter pads facing the transmission. Align the hole in the flywheel/driveplate with the dowel pin in the crankshaft, apply Lock-tite on the bolt threads, and tighten them in a criss-cross pattern to the specified torque.
Q: How to remove and reinstall the flywheel in 4.3L V6 and 5.0L, 5.7L, 7.4L V8 engine on Chevrolet Express?
A: If you have to strip the transmission, then you must erect the car, and it means that you should apply a couple of jackstands. Use a marker to indicate the position of the driveplate with regards to the crankshaft and then undo the bolts that hold the driveplate to crankshaft and if the crankshaft turns use a screwdriver to lock it. Pay attention to the fact as to whether or not the retaining ring has an installation orientation before you remove it. When disconnecting the final bolt, be sure to hold up the driveplate, and wear gloves, because during the operation the parts can be sharp. The grease and oil of the driveplate must be removed before testing; to do this, check for cracks, and check for warpage on a flat surface. Also, wash up and check the mating surfaces of drive-plate and crank-shaft and change the rear main oil seal if it is worn out before refitting. To install the driveplate the following has to be done; Place the driveplate over the crankshaft with the marks made earlier matching and the correct alignment with dowles or symmetry of bolt holes. Non hardening thread locking compound should then be applied to the threads of the bolt and the retaining ring placed if required. It is necessary to turn the driveplate anti-clockwise using a small screwdriver in order to lock it when tightening the bolts to the required torque. Last but not the least check for the leakage in the front pump seal/O-ring or any tears in it and replace it if required and then reverse the procedure for its installation.
Q: How to remove and reinstall flywheel/drive plate on DOHC engine on Chevrolet Tracker?
A: Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, then remove the transmission. On vehicles with a manual transmission, remove the pressure plate and clutch disc. Now is a good time to check/replace the clutch components and pilot bearing. If an automatic transmission is leaking, this would be a very good time to replace the front pump seal/O-ring. On drive plate-equipped models, mark the relationship between the drive plate and crankshaft to ensure correct alignment during reinstallation. Remove the bolts that secure the flywheel/drive plate to the crankshaft. If the crankshaft turns on flywheel equipped models, immobilize it by reinstalling two of the pressure plate bolts halfway and holding a prybar between them. On drive-plate-equipped models, wedge a screwdriver through the starter opening and into the ring gear teeth to immobilize the crankshaft. Remove the flywheel/drive plate from the crankshaft. Since the flywheel is fairly heavy, be sure to support it while removing the last bolt. Using brake system cleaner, clean the flywheel to remove grease and oil. Inspect the surface for cracks, rivet grooves, burned areas and score marks. Light scoring can be removed with emery cloth. Check for cracked and broken ring gear teeth. Lay the flywheel on a flat surface and use a straightedge to check for war page. Clean and inspect the mating surfaces of the flywheel/drive plate and the crankshaft. If the crankshaft rear seal is leaking, replace it before reinstalling the flywheel/drive plate. Position the flywheel/drive plate against the crankshaft. On flywheel-equipped models, be sure to align the hole in the flywheel with the alignment dowel in the crankshaft. On drive plate-equipped models, align the marks you made during removal. Before installing the bolts, apply thread locking compound to the threads. Tighten the bolts to the torque. Hold the crankshaft from turning as described previously. The remainder of installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
